Richard Whiteley 1943-2005
We are saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden death of Richard Whiteley. Oxford University Press has a longstanding relationship with the TV quiz programme Countdown, for many years providing the official dictionary used on the show.
Richard was central to the show, and those of us who worked with him have fond memories of the special contribution that he made. We extend our warmest sympathies to Richard's family and friends.
Richard Whitely's career in broadcasting spanned over 30 years, during which time he became a name and face that was instantly recognizable in every household.
A former editor of Varsity magazine, Richard began working in the newsroom at ITN before joining Yorkshire Television. He fronted regional news programmes and had an infamous run-in with a ferret before landing the job to host Countdown. His inimitable style of delivery on Countdown was a valuable commodity.
A proud Yorkshireman, he insisted that all the jackets he wore were woven from Yorkshire wool, and his ties had to be silk – as he had an allergy to polyester. Richard Whiteley fronted more than 3000 editions of Countdown, his popularity continued to grow and he received hundreds of letters each week from Countdown viewers. He will be missed.
