Colombia of course has its well-documented share of dangers for travellers. Taking a few basic precautions, however, can considerably improve your chances of avoiding any unpleasant incidents. If you are unfamiliar with the place, it is probably safest to avoid using regular city taxis. More so if you don't speak Spanish. A number of good hotels have their own fleet of private chauffeurs, and you can even arrange for these to pick you up at the airport on arrival. It's a good idea, especially since the cost really is not that high. If you need to move around the city (I'm talking about Bogotá here), it is not a bad idea to negotiate an hourly rate with a driver who has already given you good service.
They are normally very helpful, and will also be a source of good information about where to go and where not to go in the city.
Travelling between cities by road is not recommended. It's much safer to fly, and for that reason Colombia has a very good domestic air travel network.
