hydra
noun a minute freshwater invertebrate animal with a stalk-like tubular body and a ring of tentacles around the mouth. ORIGIN named after the Hydra of Greek mythology, a many-headed snake whose heads regrew as they were cut off: the hydra is so named because, if cut into pieces, each section can grow into a whole animal.
